We are getting ready to do some work for a company that does event planing and part of there work involves photography, so in my research I came across a company that is utilizing the value of a blog. Read more »
How many small businesses have blogs?
So I read an article today that was published in the New York Times. I also found more insight on the topic at Business and Blogging.com that talked about this same article. The article talks about how fewer then 5% of companies with 100 employees or less are currently blogging. Still leaving a large amount of the market yet to be discovered. There are about 25.4 million companies in the US, of those companies only 100,000 have more then 100 employees. Leaving a total of 25.3 million businesses with fewer then 100 employees. If only 5% of them are blogging that still leaves a lot of businesses who need to take a look at the “Low cost High Return Marketing Tool” that blogging is.
Now the statistics are cool and very encouraging, but the real reason I wanted to comment on this article was for the statement…

Guy Kawasaki, a serial entrepreneur, managing partner of Garage Technology Ventures and a prolific blogger, put it this way: “If you’re a clothing manufacturer or a restaurant, blogging is probably not as high on your list as making good food or good clothes.”
Why did this statement cause me to add my opinion?
Simple really, I don’t agree. I think that restaurant owners and clothing manufacturers should be using blogging as a way to market their goods. I mean why not? I think that all businesses have a good chance of making blogging an effective tool for them. In my opinion one of the greatest things about blogging is the simple fact that they are very flexible and adaptable to any business category.

Here are examples of effective blogs in those areas.
http://eatcurry.blogspot.com/ (its not an actual blog for a specific restaurant but you can apply this idea to a restaurant and make it available for customers to write reviews about your service, food, and facilities.)
http://wordpress.com/tag/clothing-manufacturer/ (this link will take you to a list of blogs for clothing manufacturers. You could provide a lot of information on a blog about the clothing that you manufacture.)

Anyone can blog about their business. It will work no matter what kind of business you own. Ask yourself this question..
When you have a need for a household service, like pluming, AC repair, landscaping, or carpet cleaning where is the first place you are going to look?
a. the phone book
b. a Google search
Where do you think consumers are going to look for your business services/products?
I repeat what I mentioned before, any business can use blogging as an effective tool as long as they do it right.
Great Business
So I am in Alaska for the next week, and last night I was walking down a street that had tons of vender’s on either side and I saw this one company that stood out to me because of their name.

And lucky for me I met this girl about a month ago and the only thing that she could talk about was blogging. {/column1}

She likes it so much Ive had her do some work for me at www.amazonlandscapesAZ.com and here is the latest post she wrote about her new job.

Remember your Vision!?
I meat a lot of business owners who are not really excited or passionate about what they do. Maybe they were at some point, but now it has become more of a job. When I quite my last job and went into my business full time I referred to it as ‘breaking free from slavery’. finally I was going to do what I loved and stop living someone else’s dream. My was about to become a reality
What drives me…
I love blogging! Its this writing about something that you really enjoy. Its knowing that what you write might benefit someone else. It could possibly save someone from losing their business.
Now I know what happens to our dreams and how easy it is for them to go from a passion to a job. For me from day one I was focused on the big picture with more new exciting ideas every day that would make me feel frustrated or like I was missing out on monster opportunities. I was excited and overwhelmed. Always feeling 2 steps behind.
Until I would have an idea and start blogging about it, and then everything was fine. I have a million other things going on (or so it seems sometimes) that sometimes I don’t get to writing a post for a couple of days. Until this week. I am leaving town tomorrow to go to Alaska for a week so on Sunday night before I went to bed I made a list of all the things I needed to do this week before I left. Meet with clients, finish website development, finish blog development, etc, etc. And I hustled to get it all done. Did I finish everything….No…but I put a big dint in the list. And this week was one of those weeks that I forgot why it is I started this business. I was frustrated trying to close sales and finish projects, until today that is. Today I wrote, and I am still writing. This is it for me this is the passion of the business. Even if no one reads it, I would still do it day in and day out.
We have to do the things we love everyday, or the things we don’t love will destroy our dreams. Every business is the same in idea. We have to sell, we have to answer the phone, we have to advertise, we have to meet with clients, we have to open the doors to the store, we have to balance the check book, we have firer people, and hirer people. But somewhere in all that is something that you love to do. And if you want to keep your dream alive and succeed then you need to take a break from the noise of your business and do what brings you dream to light.
What drives you…?
Can you remember?
Can you bring it back into focus?
Will it improve your business?
Will it improve you relationship with your family?
What drives you??
I still feel like I am behind and get frustrated, because the ideas come so fast that I cant type fast enough to get them out and working. However, the key is to keep plugging along and making the best out of what you can do.
